If you love designing in Canva but feel limited by the default fonts, you’re not alone. I felt the same way when I started creating ebooks, worksheets, and Pinterest pins for my blog.
Canva already has thousands of fonts, but sometimes you need your own brand font, a handwriting font, or a custom font downloaded from Google Fonts or Creative Fabrica. That’s where font upload comes in.
In this guide, I’ll explain how to upload a font to Canva in simple steps. I’ll also clear a very common doubt - can free Canva users upload fonts, or is it only for Canva Pro users?
I’ll share my personal experience, different ways to upload fonts, common mistakes, FAQs, and practical tips. After reading this article, you’ll confidently know how to upload a font in Canva and start using it in your designs without confusion.

Who Can Upload a Font in Canva - Free Users or Pro?
This is one of the most asked questions: can we upload a font in Canva for free?
The short answer is no—font upload is available only for Canva Pro, Canva Teams, Canva for Education, and Canva for Nonprofits users.
When I was using the free version of Canva, I searched everywhere for the font upload option, but it simply wasn’t there. That’s when I realized that uploading a font in Canva is a premium feature. Once I upgraded to Canva Pro, the font upload option became visible instantly under Brand Kit.
If you are building a brand, selling templates, or creating ebooks (like I do), Canva Pro is totally worth it. Having your own fonts makes your designs look professional and consistent across all platforms.
Different Font File Types Supported by Canva
Before uploading a font in Canva, it’s important to understand which font file formats Canva supports. I once tried uploading a font and got an error—turns out the file format was not supported.
Canva supports the following font formats:
- OTF (OpenType Font) – Most recommended
- TTF (TrueType Font) – Works perfectly
- WOFF (Web Open Font Format) – Supported but less common
Unsupported formats may fail to upload or show errors. Also, Canva does not allow ZIP files, so you must extract the font file before uploading.
Important tips from my experience:
- Always download fonts from trusted sources
- Make sure you have commercial usage rights
- Avoid uploading corrupted or incomplete font files
Once your font is uploaded successfully, it stays in your Canva account and can be reused in unlimited designs.
How to Upload a Font in Canva?
Method 1: Uploading a Font in Canva Using Brand Kit
This is the most popular and reliable method to upload a font in Canva. I personally use this method for all my brand fonts.
Steps to upload a font using Brand Kit:
Step 1: Log in to your Canva account
If you have a Canva account, log in to open the Dashboard. If you're a new user, you can create a free account of Canva by joining its free plan.
Step 2: Open Brand Kit
Click on Brand from the left sidebar.
On the Brand Kit page, click on Fonts. Now, click on 'Add to category' button and click on the 'Upload a font' option as shown in screenshot below.
Step 3: Upload Font
Now, click on the Add new button to upload font from your computer. You can add OTF or TTF font file. See the screenshot below.
If you've purchased fonts from Creative Fabrica or have downloaded open source free fonts from Google, you can upload them to Canva using this process. However, always check the terms and conditions (or permission) of the source website from where you've downloaded or purchased the fonts.
Once uploaded, the font becomes part of your brand kit. In my case, this helped me maintain the same font style across ebooks, worksheets, planners, and blog graphics.
Method 2: Uploading a Font in Canva Through a Design
Many users don’t know this, but you can also upload a font while working on a design, although it still requires Canva Pro.
Step 1: Open an Existing Design
In my last article, I had shown you how to create a booklet in Canva, let's open this design.
In the screenshot above, you can see that I have opened an existing design created on Canva.
Step 2: Click a Text Box
Click any of the text box present in the design. In the screenshot below, you can see that I've selected a text box 'Product'.
After selecting a text box, click on the font option from the toolbar at the top. See the screenshot below. Then, click on the Upload a font option.
Now, select the font file to upload the font in Canva.
This method is helpful when you are already designing and suddenly realize you need a custom font. I’ve used this method several times when designing Pinterest pins at the last minute.
However, keep in mind:
- The font still gets saved to your Brand Kit
- You must have Pro access
- Permission confirmation is mandatory
Both methods do the same thing, the Brand Kit method is just more organized.
How to Use Your Uploaded Font in Canva Designs
Once you upload a font in Canva, using it is super easy. The first time I uploaded a font, I thought it would be complicated, but it’s actually seamless.
Here’s how to use your uploaded font:
- Open any Canva design
- Click on the text element
- Open the font dropdown
- Scroll to Uploaded fonts or Brand fonts
- Select your uploaded font
Your font works just like any other Canva font. You can:
- Change font size
- Adjust spacing and alignment
- Use bold/italic versions (if available)
- Apply effects like shadow or curve
Uploaded fonts are available across all designs in your account, which is perfect for branding and template selling.

- Font upload option not visible → You are likely using Canva Free
- Font upload failed → File format not supported or corrupted
- Font not showing in designs → Refresh/reload Canva or check Brand Kit
- Licensing warning → Canva requires confirmation of font rights
