How to Make Christmas Cards on Canva

Before You Start: Decide the Style, Size, and Goal

Before you open Canva, take one minute to decide what you’re making, because that decision saves a lot of time later.

Are you creating a personal greeting card, a business holiday card, a classroom card, or a Christmas party invitation?

When I design for clients, I always ask one simple question: “Do you want it printed or shared on WhatsApp/email?” That one detail decides the format and file type.

For printing, you’ll want a high-quality layout with safe margins and a clean front/back design. For digital sharing, you can go bolder with colors and even add a QR code or short link.

Also decide the card style: cute, minimalist, vintage, modern, or photo-based. If you already have brand colors (for a business), keep them ready. If it’s personal, choose 2–3 main colors to avoid a messy look.

Quick checklist (helps a lot):

  • Card type: folded card / postcard / invitation
  • Use: print / email / social sharing
  • Size: A5, A6, 5x7 in, square, etc.
  • Theme: Santa, snow, greenery, nativity, minimal text
  • Content: names, greeting message, date/location (if invite)

How to Make Christmas Cards on Canva

Below, I have mentioned step-by-step tutorial to create Christmas cards in Canva. Let's begin.

Step 1: Open Canva and Choose the Right Christmas Card Size

Now let’s jump into Canva.

Go to Canva and search for “Christmas Card” in the search bar. You’ll see ready-made Christmas card templates in different shapes and styles. See the screenshot below.

Search Christmas Card on Canva

In the screenshot below, you can see the Christmas card templates that you get after you search the term "christmas card" on Canva. Select the one that you like the most.

Christmas Card Templates on Canva

In the screenshot below, you can see that I've selected a template (see the red arrow) to design my Christmas card on Canva.

Select Christmas Card Template

Next, click on the "Customize this template" button as shown below. By doing this, you'll be able to edit the template in the Canva Editor as per your need.

Customize Christmas Card Template

The selected template will open in the Canva Editor. Here, we can customize each elements of the Christmas card template - text, images, icons, background, and more.

Edit Christmas Template in Canva Editor

In the next step, we will customize the template to match our requirements. So, if you've some particular idea or design in mind, you can edit the template to make it your own.

Step 2: Customize the Template With Your Text, Fonts, & Colors

Once your template is open, it’s time to make it yours.

First, edit the main greeting text like “Merry Christmas” or “Season’s Greetings.” Then add your personal message, family name, business name, or client details.

Canva makes text editing simple: click any text box and type. For fonts, keep it readable—Christmas designs look great with a mix of one decorative font (headline) and one simple font (body).

When I’m creating Christmas cards in Canva for myself, friends or clients, I avoid using too many fonts because it instantly makes the design look unprofessional. Two fonts are usually enough.

Next, adjust colors. If the template is too bright, tone it down. If it’s too plain, add a festive accent color like red, green, or gold. Keep contrast strong so the message is easy to read.

Let's try making few changes to the template we had selected in the previous step. I will change the background color first. Select the design and click on the background color option from the toolbar. See the screenshot below.

Change Background Color in Canva

In the screenshot below, you can see that I have changed the color to light lavendar using the Canva color picker tool.

Use the Canva Color Picker Tool

To make any changes to the text element, double click on it and enter your text, change font style, font size, font color and apply bold, italic, underline from the toolbar as shown in the screenshot below.

Below, you can see that I have entered my own text replacing the existing text.

Change Text Element

Easy font + color tips:

  • Use 1 festive font for the heading, 1 clean font for details
  • Keep the greeting big and clear
  • Stick to 2–3 main colors
  • Make sure text is readable on busy backgrounds
  • Align text properly (center alignment works well for cards)

Step 3: Add Photos, & Christmas-Themed Design

This is the step that makes your card feel special. If you’re creating a family photo card, upload your image using Uploads and drag it into a frame (or place it directly).

Or, you can also find hundreds of pictures, graphics, and icons in the Elements tab to design your Christmas cards.

Let's see an example. We will change the picture of Santa in the design. First, click the picture, and go to Elements tab and type the text "santa" and press the Enter key. Now, click on "See all" to find all the pictures related to the searched term "santa" (see the screenshot below).

Change Picture Element

Now, we will click the picture that we want to add to our design. In the screenshot below, you can see that I have resize the picture and position it in the design exactly where I want.

Adjust Size and Position the Picture

Similarly, you can add any pictures related to Christmas theme by searching them in the Elements tab. See the screenshot below.

Design details that work beautifully for designing Christmas cards on Canva:

  • Add a soft background texture (paper, snow, watercolor)
  • Use frames for photos (circle, rounded rectangle, collage)
  • Add corner decorations (holly, pine, stars)
  • Keep margins safe (don’t push text too close to edges)
  • Use the Position tool to layer elements neatly

Tips: Canva has frames made for holiday cards, so you can easily create that “photo-in-a-box” look. If you don’t want photos, you can use textured backgrounds like paper, watercolor, or soft gradients for a warm holiday feel.

Personally, when I want a premium look, I use light backgrounds (cream/white) and add small Christmas details, like pine leaves, stars, or snowflakes, around the corners.

Keep your design balanced: don’t fill every empty space. White space is not “empty,” it’s what makes the card look clean and expensive.

Step 4: Make It Print-Ready (Or Digital-Ready) & Export Correctly

Before downloading, always do a quick final review. Read your text slowly and check spelling—names, dates, and “Merry Christmas” mistakes happen more than we think. I’ve caught tiny typos at the last minute just by zooming in and reading it once like a stranger.

Download Christmas Card in Canva

Once you're happy with your Christmas card, click on the Share button on the top-right and click the Download button. Now, from the File type option, choose your preferred file format - JPG, PNG, PDF Standard, PDF Print, SVG, and more.

Choose File Type

If you’re printing, you should download as PDF Print for best quality. If you’re sharing digitally, PNG or JPG usually works well.

Canva also lets you share a view link, but for clients I prefer delivering a downloadable file plus a share link.

Best export options:

  1. For printing: PDF Print (high quality)
  2. For sharing: PNG (best quality) or JPG (smaller size)
  3. For emailing: PDF (easy to open)
  4. For social: PNG/JPG in the right dimensions
  5. Always save a copy of your editable Canva link (for future edits)

Canva Elements for Christmas Cards

One of my favorite parts of designing Canva Christmas cards is using Canva Elements.

Elements are the graphics library inside Canva where you can find Christmas-based icons, illustrations, stickers, shapes, and decorative items.

To explore them, click Elements from the left menu and search for keywords like “Christmas,” “snowflake,” “reindeer,” “Santa,” “holly,” “pine,” “gingerbread,” “ornament,” “Christmas lights,” or “winter.”

You’ll instantly see thousands of options, including simple line icons, cute cartoon illustrations, and realistic watercolor-style graphics.

In the screenshot below, I've searched for the term - christmas, by selecting the Elements tab.

Christmas Elements

When I want the card to look elegant, I search for “gold foil,” “minimal Christmas,” or “winter botanical” and use small accents instead of big stickers. For kids’ cards, I go for cheerful icons like candy canes and Santa hats.

A great trick is to pick one illustration style and stick to it, so your design looks consistent. You can also adjust element colors (for editable graphics), change transparency, or add shadows for depth.

If you’re using free Canva, you’ll still find plenty of festive elements, just filter out Pro items if needed. You can easily do that by selecting only those elements that don't have a crown mark.

Element keywords to try:

  • Christmas watercolor, winter doodles, holiday icons
  • Snowy background, pine branches, festive border
  • Candy cane pattern, gift box icon, star sparkle

Tips to Create Perfect Christmas Cards in Canva

If you want your design to look “store-bought” (in a good way), small design decisions matter.

The biggest improvement I’ve seen in my own designs is learning when to stop. Early on, I used to add too many icons because everything looked cute. But once I started keeping the layout clean, my cards looked more premium and clients noticed.

Try to build a visual hierarchy: the greeting is the star, the name/message supports it, and decorations stay in the background. Also, use alignment tools (Position, Tidy up, Guides) because even a few pixels of misalignment can make the design look off.

If you’re designing for clients, create 2–3 variations quickly (different colors or fonts) and let them choose, this saves revisions later and looks professional.

My go-to professional tips:

  • Use 2 fonts max (1 festive + 1 simple)
  • Keep strong contrast between text and background
  • Don’t overcrowd, leave breathing space
  • Use grids/frames for photo cards
  • Match illustration styles (don’t mix random sticker styles)
  • Add a thin border to make the card feel “finished”
  • Duplicate the page to create multiple versions fast
  • Always proofread names, dates, and spellings before export
