How to Make a Hanging Indent on Canva
Before we start learning how to make a hanging indent in our Canva design, let me first explain in brief what is meant by hanging indent so that we have a clear idea of what we're trying to achieve in this tutorial.
What is a Hanging Indent?
A hanging indent is an indentation of the second and subsequent lines of text on a page. When we apply handing indent to our paragraph, it indents all the lines of the paragraph, except the first line, by the amount specified.
Let's get started with step-by-step tutorial to learn hanging indent in Canva and see how it can enhance the visual appeal of presentations, infographics, and digital documents to make them more engaging and professional.
Step 1: Login to Canva and Create a New Design
First, you need to login to your account in Canva by visiting this link - https://canva.com. After login to your Canva account, click on Create a design and select a design you want to create.
For the sake of this tutorial, I have selected the design Instagram Post (Square).
After selecting the design, Canva Editor will open with your blank Instagram Post design.
In the above design, we will insert a paragraph and try to implement a hanging indent on the paragraph.
Let's move on to Step 2.
Step 2: Add the Text Element
Now, in this step, we will add a text element to our design. To add a text, click on Text from the left of the Canva editor, then click on Add a little bit of body text.
It will add a text element to the design as shown below.
Step 3: Add a Paragraph to the Text Box
In this step, we will add a paragraph to the text element. In the below screenshot, you can see that I have added some dummy paragraph to my text box.
You can easily get dummy text from this site - https://www.lipsum.com/.
After adding the text, we will drag the text to the inside of our design to add some margin to the left and the right side of the design.
In the below screenshot you can see that I have added some margins on both the sides of the designs. I have also reduced the font size from 24 to 16 to make it look more readable and pleasing.
Step 4: Make Hanging Indent on Canva Design
Now, we will start the process to actually implement hanging indent on our paragraph. First of all, select the text and click on Align four-times to make the text-alignment - Justify.
Now, applying Justify alignment, click on the Duplicate button as shown below to make a copy of this paragraph.
In the below screenshot, you can see that I have made a copy of the first paragraph using the Duplicate button.
After making a copy of the paragraph, place it just below the first paragraph as shown below.
Now, in the first paragraph, we will only keep the first line and delete the remaining lines. Select all the lines except the first one as shown below and press the delete button.
Now, move on to the second paragraph. Here, we will only delete the first line and keep the remaining lines.
After deleting the first line, drag the text using the handle as shown below towards the right of the screen.
After dragging the second paragraph towards the right, now, we will move it towards the first paragraph.
In the below screenshot, you can see that I have perfectly place the second paragraph below the first paragraph and create a hanging indent just like we do in case of Microsoft Word or Google Docs.
Now, one final step is remaining. Since our hanging indent design contains two separate paragraph, you can't move them together.
In order to make them move together, you need to group them together.
To group these two paragraphs, select both of them and click on Group as shown below. Now both the paragraphs will move as a single text element.
That's it, this is how we can make a hanging indent in Canva by following some easy to follow steps.
