What is an Amazon Associate Program?
The Amazon Associates Program is one of the largest affiliate networks in the world. Content creators, publishers, and website owners can join this program to monetize their traffic.
It has a huge inventory of products that you can promote in your website. Thus, for affiliate marketers the only thing remains is to monetize this wonderful program by finding a golden keyword that could skyrocket their earnings.
How Does Amazon Affiliate Program Works?
Anyone can join Amazon Affiliate program (also known as Amazon Associate). It is free to join. Just sign up and you will be approved by Amazon in no time. It is a pretty straightforward process.
After approval, you will get a unique affiliate link from Amazon to promote in your website.
Now choose any product on Amazon that you want to promote and generate banner and links for it.
See the image given below.
You can generate three types of links-
- Text only link
- Image only link
- Text + Image link
In Amazon affiliate program of some countries like USA you can also generate Custom links.
Please remember that the cookie period in Amazon is only 24-hour. It means a user after being redirected from your website has to purchase any product from Amazon within this period otherwise you are not eligible to receive any commission.
I know most affiliates didn't like this but this is the way this program works.
One good thing about this program is that you not only earn commission on products that you refer but also on products that your user may purchases along with the your promoted product on Amazon.
Suppose you have written an article about "best water purifiers in India" and put affiliate links in the article. Now, when a users comes to your blog and read this article and clicks on the affiliate link, he/she would be redirected to Amazon.
Now suppose he/she purchases 5 number of products then you will get commission on all these 5 products.
You will get commission even if he/she chooses not buy the water purifier but other products. Amazing, isn't it. Let's move on to keyword research.
How To Do Proper Keyword Research?
Everything is rosy till now. Now comes the hardest part. Yes, keyword research is the hardest part and you must invest significant time into this.
If you don't do keyword research the right way you will end up with one of the following results:
- You will not get any visitors on your blog. Yes, if you don't target the right keyword you won't get any visitors.
- You will get visitors but not targeted visitors who are interested to make a purchase.
- You will get visitors who are itching to buy the product you are promoting.
Third result is the one which one should focus to target.
So, you must give effort to do keyword research in proper way to get result as mentioned at sl. no. 3 above. These type of visitors will give you sales and commission.
How does a perfect keyword look like?
You should target keyword that satisfies the following criteria-
- Keywords that can bring decent amount of traffic from search engine like Google.
- Keywords that are not difficult to rank on the first page of Google.
- Keywords that brings traffic with strong buying intent.
Thus, your keyword research strategy should satisfy the above mentioned criteria.
Let's do keyword research taking an example from Amazon's inventory.
Look for products which is popular among people. How do you find it? Just look at the products which are Best Sellers having lots of ratings and good reviews.
Let's say you have good knowledge on water purifier and you can write a lot on this topic. So, how do we find best sellers in this category.
In Amazon's home page, select Best Sellers just below the search button. Now select Home & Kitchen from the left. Under Home & Kitchen select Water Purifiers & Accessories (see the image given below).
It will display all top selling water purifiers with total number of ratings. This will give you an idea on which products to focus most.
Large number of ratings of a product give you an idea that people are buying this product.
Also, read reviews of the product as it will give you an idea whether people who had purchased this product are satisfied with it or not.
Okay, the keyword we have selected in Best Seller category is Water Purifier and let's say the market we are targeting is India.
Please note that if you target the main keyword water purifier it would be very difficult to rank in Google. Also, this keyword is very broad and there is no intent also.
When you do keyword research for Amazon products try to think like a buyer.
What a buyer from India who is looking to buy a water purifier will type in search engine like Google?
Obviously, a buyer who has strong intent to purchase may search like this:
- best water purifier for home
- best water purifier in India
- best water purifier
- best ro water purifier
- best water purifier under Rs 10000
You see here the intent to purchase is so strong. The person who is searching for the above keyword is in strong buying mode.
The word “best” connotes buying intent. Some other examples are "top", "cheap", “affordable,”,” etc.
For our example, however, I just went with the word “best”. You can use any intent term as per your criteria.
Thus, if you are targeting the above keywords, then there is high probability to get more sales because your visitors are in strong buying mode.
So, you must target keywords where there is strong intent to buy.
Keyword Research with Ahrefs
Let's go to Ahrefs.com. If you don't know about Ahrefs, it is one of the best keyword research tool for amazon products.
Now open Keyword Explorer. Here, we would search for our intent keyword - best water purifier.
Let's see what is the result.
Now that you understand how to search for strong intent keywords, here is one more thing you should consider. It is long tail keyword.
What is a long tail keyword?
Long tail keywords are those three, four or even five keyword phrases which are very, very specific to whatever you are selling.
Long-tail keywords get less search traffic, but will usually have a higher conversion value, as they are more specific.
They are easier to rank for in Google as there are less competition for these keywords.
So, how to find long tail keywords with less competition.
See the above image again. Here, you can see Keyword Ideas by search volume. You can find all the long tail keywords here.
From the above list, suppose we take the keyword - best water purifier in India. It has got 8000 monthly searches which is very good. Now let's see what are the competition for this keyword.
See the below image.
In the above image, you can see that the top 10 results in Google for the keyword - bests water purifiers in India, there are 4 websites whose DR is less than 40. Out of those 4, 2 have DR less than 30 and they rank in number 1 and 2 in Google first page.
You see these long tail keywords are easier to target. So, always narrow down your keyword to the extent where it has a decent volume but competition is less.
What is Domain Rating (DR)?
See the definition according to Ahrefs.
Domain Rating is a proprietary Ahrefs' metric that shows the strength of a target website's total backlink profile (in terms of its size and quality). DR is measured on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100, with the latter being the strongest.
Now that you found the perfect long tail keyword with strong buying intent, now your next step is to write an in-depth review on the product.
The review should highlight all the information that a user are searching for on internet. The review should contain its features, benefits, price, pros and cons and so on.
For writing reviews, you could also take the help of user reviews on Amazon. It gives you many new information about the product which otherwise is not possible.
Wrapping Up
Hope that you know how to find a long tail keyword with strong intent, nice volume and low competition.
By following the steps that I explained in this guide, you’ll be able to come up with:
- Keywords with a strong buying intent.
- Keywords with a decent amount of monthly search volume in Google.
- Keywords that have less competition and can rank easily in the search engines.
At the end, let me give a disclaimer here that apart from keyword research there are many other factors which are responsible for ranking your article high in a search engine.
It all depends on how well you have written the article, how you have used the LSI keyword in the article, whether you have done proper off-page and on-page SEO or not, etc.
You see that there are still more work for you to do. But as I have stated in the beginning of this article that if you managed to find the right intent keyword your work is almost 80% done.
I hope that now you learn how to proper keyword research for an Amazon affiliate website.
So, let's get started. Start finding amazing keywords for your Amazon affiliate website now and have a great success ahead.
