Fix Weird Spacing Between Words in Google Docs

Fix Weird Spacing Between Words in Google Docs

Below I have mentioned some common causes and fixes for removing spaces between words in Google Docs.

1. Paragraph with Justify Alignment

First, ensure that you are logged into your Google account and have the Google Docs document open in which you are experiencing issues with spacing between words.

Select the section of text or paragraph where you are encountering the spacing problem. This can be a single paragraph, a few lines, or the entire document.

Below you can see that my Google document contains two paragraphs.

In the first paragraph, you can see some extra spacing between words, and also after the full stops (.) and commas (,).

In the second paragraph, there is no extra spacing between words, full stops, and commas.

Google Docs Paragraph

You may wondering that both the paragraphs looks similar then why the first paragraph has weird spacing in between the words.

The answer is Alignment.

Due to difference in alignment set for these two paragraphs, one has extra spaces between words while the other has none.

Let's check the alignment of both these paragraphs. We will first select the second paragraph.

Left Alignment Google Docs

In the above screenshot, you can see that the alignment of the paragraphs is set as Left align. Under left alignment, you won't see any extra spacing between words.

Now, let us check the alignment of the first paragraph. To check the alignment, either select the whole paragraph or simply put the cursor anywhere inside the paragraph.

Below you can see that I have selected the first paragraph. You can also see that the alignment of this paragraph is set to Justify.

Justify Alignment in Google Docs

With justify alignment, you may noticed that the paragraph contains extra spaces between the words.

Please note that the justify alignment is important in text formatting because it allows for alignment of text on both the left and right margins. This results in clean and professional look in documents.

However, it comes at a cost of extra spaces between the words and of course, reading problems.

Thus, to remove the extra space between the words in your document, you need to change the alignment from justify to left.

To fix the spacing issues, first select the paragraph containing the weird spacing. Then go to Align >> Left align. You can use the shortcut key - Ctrl+Shift+L to change the paragraph alignment to left.

Below, you can see that I have changed the alignment of the selected paragraph from justify to left, and now all the extra spacing between the words has been removed and contains even spaces between them.

This is how you can fix weird spacing in Google Docs and other word processing software.

Below I have discussed some other issues that can cause spacing in your text content.

2. Different Text Styles and Formatting

Sometimes due to different text styles and formatting, you may see extra spacing between words in your paragraph.

To fix this issue, you need to check the default text style. Select a portion of the text which doesn't appears normal.

Then, click Format on the menu bar. Choose Paragraph styles >> Normal text, and then Apply 'Normal text'.

By applying the above process, you will see that the spacing issues in your paragraph has been fixed.

3. Font and Character Spacing

Inconsistency in use of fonts may also cause spacing issues in your content. I have observed many a times that usage of different fonts in the same document can lead to unpredicted spacing.

To ensure uniformity in your content, you need to select all the text (Ctrl+A) and choose a single font instead of multiple fonts.

4. Technical Glitches

Sometimes, the problem is not with the content but the container itself. Google Docs, like all software, is prone to glitches.

If all the above fixes doesn't result in fixes, then you need to resolve this problem by refreshing your browser. It is a simple yet often overlooked solution.

By refreshing the browser and clearing browser cache and cookies, might just be the techno-purge your document needs.

I hope by applying the above methods you would be now able to remove the extra spacing from your Google document.
