What is a Collage in Canva?
A collage is basically a combination of multiple images, graphics, text, and design elements arranged in a visually attractive way on a single page or canvas. Instead of showing one image, a collage helps you tell a story using several visuals together.
When I first started using Canva, I used to manually place images side by side, but later I discovered built-in collage templates and grids, which saved me a lot of time and made my designs look more professional.
In Canva, you can create different types of collages such as photo collages, digital collages, aesthetic collages, mood boards, social media collages, and even printable collage designs.
Check out some examples of collage below.
Types of Collages You Can Create in Canva
Canva allows you to create different types of collages depending on your purpose, and understanding these types will help you design better.
Photo Collage
This is the most common type where you combine multiple photos into one layout. It is perfect for personal memories, travel photos, or social media posts.
Digital Collage
A digital collage includes photos, illustrations, textures, and text elements. These are often used for creative projects, blog graphics, and aesthetic designs.
Social Media Collage
These are designed specifically for platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest. They are optimized for size and engagement.
Mood Board Collage
A mood board is used by designers, marketers, and creators to visualize ideas. It includes colors, fonts, images, and inspiration elements.
Business or Product Collage
If you are selling products, you can showcase multiple angles or features of your product in one collage.
Printable Collage
These are designed for printing, such as posters, scrapbooks, or wall art.
From my experience, I mostly create Pinterest collages because they perform really well in terms of traffic and engagement.
How to Make Collage on Canva
Now let’s move to the most important part of this guide, where I will explain how to make a collage on Canva step by step in a simple and practical way.
Step 1: Open Canva and Create a Design
First, go to Canva and log in to your account. If you do not have an account, you can create one for free.
Once you are inside the dashboard, click on “Create a Design.” You can either choose a custom size or select a predefined size like Instagram Post, Pinterest Pin, or A4 document.
Or, you can go to Templates, search for a design template such as Pinterest Pin, Instagram Post, Facebook Post, and more.
In the screenshot below, you can see that I've clicked on Templates, then searched for the term 'pinterest pin', and then clicked on 'Create blank' to create Pinterest collage pin from scratch.
Tip: When I create collages for Pinterest, I usually select the Pinterest Pin size because it is already optimized.
Step 2: Search for Collage Templates
In the Canva editor, go to the search bar and type “collage.” You will see hundreds of free and premium collage templates.
Choose a template that matches your style or purpose. If you are a beginner, I recommend starting with a template because it saves time and gives you a professional layout.
Personally, I often pick a template and then customize it heavily to match my blog branding.
In the screenshot above, you can see that I've searched for the term 'collage' in the search box. Next, I have chosen a collage design (see the arrow marked above).
On selection, the collage will be automatically be applied to your Canva design.
Step 3: Add Text and Typography
If you want to add text, click on “Text” and choose a heading, subheading, or body text. Write your message and customize the font, size, color, and spacing.
For example, if you are creating a collage for Instagram, you can add a quote or caption.
Thus, to change the default text, select the text and enter your text. To change the font, select the text again and click font in the floating tool bar as shown above. Now, select a font of your choice. Please note that you can also upload a font in Canva.
In the screenshot above, you can see that I have change the default text as well as the font style.
Now, we'll delete the default images one by one and add images related to the collage design i.e. Europe Travel Guide. So, we will add four images related to Europe tourist places.
In the screenshot below, you can see that to delete an image, you need to select it and press the delete button or click on the delete icon. I have also deleted the first image from the collage.
So, to make a collage on Canva, you need to deleted all the images present in Canva collage.
In the screenshot above, you can see that I've deleted all the images from the collage design. In next step, we will add images as per our requirements to the design.
Step 4: Upload Your Images
Search image from the Elements tab and add it to the design one by one
After deleting all the images, you need to upload your images or add image from the Canva Elements tab. So, add images from the Elements tab or click on “Uploads” and upload your images from your device.
Once uploaded, simply drag and drop the images into the frames or grids. Canva automatically adjusts the image inside the frame. You can double-click the image to reposition or zoom it.
Alternatively, you can go to the Elements tab and search for your desired images.
For example, since our collage design is related to European tourism, I'll search for images related to European tourist places or scenery in the Elements tab and add them to the design one by one.
You can also filter the images as per your design requirement. For example, my collage design on Canva have image area of vertical size. So, I will filter the search results so that it only include the vertical images. See the below screenshot.
In the screenshot below, you can see that I've already added four images related to European cities to create the collage design on Canva related to European Travel Guide.
Step 7 (Optional): Add Elements and Decorations
Go to “Elements” and explore shapes, icons, stickers, and illustrations.
You can use these elements to decorate your collage and make it more attractive.
However, one thing I learned from experience is not to overuse elements because it can make the design look cluttered.
Step 8: Preview and Download
Once your collage is ready, click on “Share” and then “Download.”
You can download your collage in formats like PNG, JPG, or PDF depending on your requirement.
For social media, I usually download in PNG for better quality.
Tips to Create Professional Collages in Canva
Based on my personal experience, I would like to share a few tips that can help you improve your collage designs.
Always use high-quality images because low-quality images can ruin your collage. Try to maintain a consistent color theme so that your design looks visually appealing.
Avoid adding too many elements and keep your design clean. Use spacing properly so that your collage does not look crowded. Experiment with different layouts and styles to find what works best for you.
Alternative Method
As mentioned in Step 2 above, we will not search for 'collage' term in this alternative method to make collage on Canva. We'll use grids and frames to create different types of collages on Canva.
Step 1: Same as mentioned in First Method
Step 2: Use Grids and Frames for Structure
If you want to create a collage from scratch, go to “Elements” and search for “grids” or “frames.”
Grids allow you to divide your canvas into sections, while frames allow you to insert images easily by dragging and dropping.
This is one feature that completely changed how I create collages because it keeps everything aligned automatically.
Step 3: Upload Your Images
Next, click on “Uploads” and upload your images from your device or search for images from the Element tab as mentioned earlier.
Next steps are similar to mentioned above.
After completing all the steps as mentioned in the earlier method, click on the Share button and download the collage in your preferred format.
That's it, this is how you can make collage on Canva.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
When I started creating collages, I made a few mistakes that you should avoid.
One common mistake is using too many images, which makes the collage look messy. Another mistake is not aligning elements properly. Also, using random colors without a theme can make your design look unprofessional. Instead, you can use your Canva brand kit colors to have a consistent color theme.
Over time, I learned that simplicity always wins in design.
