What is an Infographic?

An infographic is a visual way of presenting information so that people can understand it quickly. Instead of reading long paragraphs, readers get the main ideas through icons, colors, charts, and short text.

Infographics combine content + design to make information engaging and easy to remember.

Uses of Infographics

Infographics are used almost everywhere today, such as:

  • Blog posts
  • Social media posts (Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook)
  • Presentations
  • Classroom teaching
  • Marketing materials
  • Email newsletters
  • Digital products
  • YouTube thumbnails
  • Business reports
  • Lead magnets

I personally use infographics on some of my blog articles because they increase “time on page” and help with SEO. They also get more shares on Pinterest and help drive more traffic.

How to Make an Infographic in Canva Step-by-Step

Creating infographics in Canva is very simple. Here’s a complete guide even if you’re using Canva for the first time.

Step 1: Log in to Canva

Visit Canva.com and log into your account. If you don’t have an account, you can create one for free.

I started designing infographics using Canva Free, and trust me, even the free version has everything you need.

Step 2: Search for “Infographic Templates”

Search Infographic in Canva

On the Canva homepage, go to the search bar and type “Infographic.” Canva will show thousands of:

  • Business infographics
  • Health infographics
  • Education infographics
  • Timeline infographics
  • Step-by-step infographics
  • Comparison infographics

Choose a template that matches your style and topic.

Step 3: Select a Template You Like

Click on the infographic you prefer and open it in the Canva editor. You can fully customize the template:

  • Change text
  • Replace icons
  • Add charts
  • Change colors
  • Adjust layout

When I create infographics for my blogs, I usually pick a template that is clean and easy to read. Simplicity always works best.

Click - Customize This Template

In the above screenshot, you can see that I have a chosen a template for this tutorial. Now, to edit this template, you'll need to click on the button - Customize this template. You'll be taken to the Canva Editor where you'll be able to make changes to each elements of the infographics.

Thus, inside Canva Editor, you can make changes to elements like text, icons, images, colors, layouts, background, logo, charts and more.

Step 4: Customize the Text

Click on any text box to edit the content. Use short sentences and bullet points. Infographics should present information quickly, not overwhelm readers.

For example:

❌ Long paragraphs
✔️ Short points
✔️ Clear headings
✔️ Simple language

To edit text, select the text and then enter your text. See the screenshot above.

In the screenshot below, you can see that I have entered my own text replacing the default text of the template. I have also changed the font style to 'Chunk Five'.

Similarly, you can make changes to all the text present in the template as per your requirements. In the screenshot below, you can see that I have marked text where I have made changes in the infographic template.

If you're making an infographic in Canva, this is the way to make changes to a text element.

Step 5: Add Icons, Graphics, and Elements

On the left sidebar, click Elements. Search for icons like:

  • Checkmarks
  • Arrows
  • Charts
  • Shapes
  • Illustrations

Canva also offers animated elements if you want to use the infographic in a video or presentation. Personally, I love using simple flat icons—they make your infographic look clean and professional.

To make changes to existing images or icons, you would need to select the image/icon and then use the Canva Elements tab to add image/icon of your choice.

For example, let's change the graphic as marked in the screenshot below. You'll need to select it and press the Delete button.

Select Image and Delete

Now, click the Elements tab on the left side of the Canva Editor and search for term related to your infographics.

For example, I have searched for notes as I want to add a graphic related to taking notes. See the screenshot below. Now, click on the See all option to see all the graphics related to your search term.

Canva Elements Tab

Now, click the graphic that you want to add. After adding the graphic to the design, resize it and position it at the appropriate place. See the screenshot below.

Step 6: Add Charts and Graphs (Optional)

If your infographic involves data, click Charts under the Elements tab. You can add:

  • Bar charts
  • Pie charts
  • Line graphs
  • Comparison bars

Enter your own data and Canva will automatically update the chart. This is extremely helpful when creating educational or business infographics.

Step 7: Choose a Color Scheme

Choose colors that match your brand or topic. You can use:

  • Brand colors
  • Canva color palettes
  • Custom color combinations

Tip: Use 3 colors maximum to keep your design clean.

Tips for Creating the Perfect Infographic in Canva

Here are some easy but powerful tips I follow when designing infographics:

Here are some easy but powerful tips I follow when designing infographics:

✔️ Keep the design simple
Your infographic should be clean and easy to scan.

✔️ Use readable fonts
Stick to 2 font families:

  • One for headings
  • One for body text

✔️ Add icons to support text
Icons break the text and make the infographic visually appealing.

✔️ Maintain consistency
Use the same style of icons, colors, and spacing.

✔️ Use high-quality images
Avoid blurry graphics.

✔️ Follow a logical structure
Present information from top to bottom in a clear sequence.

✔️ Avoid too much text
Infographics should “show” more and “tell” less.

✔️ Add your website or logo
Great for branding and sharing on Pinterest.

I learned this from one of my first infographics, after it started getting shared, people didn't know it was created by me because I forgot to add my website at the bottom. Don’t make this mistake! 😄
