How to Create Vertical Text in Canva
First, you need to log in to your Canva account. If you don't have an account, you can either join its free trial which gives you access to premium features for 30 days or you can join its forever free plan with basic features.
Once you've log in to your account, you need to create a new design or open one of your existing designs.
Let's start with a new design.
Click on Create a design, and you would get some suggestions (see the below screenshot). Alternatively, you can enter and search for your design in the Search bar (for example, Pinterest post, infographics, Facebook post, blog banner, YouTube thumbnail, and more).
For this tutorial, let's chose the option - Instagram Post (Square) as shown in the below screenshot.
When you click on Instagram Post (Square), Canva Editor will open. Here, you create your design with different designing options given at the left of the editor.
To create a vertical text in Canva, first we'll add a text in our design. To add a text, click on Text, then click on Add a text box (see the below screenshot).
Now, you can see a text on your design as shown in the below screenshot.
By default, the text is aligned horizontally. To make it vertical, we will perform some small steps but before that you can add your own text to replace the default text - Your paragraph text.
In the above screenshot, you can see that I have added a text - Vertical Text replacing the default text.
To make this vertical in Canva, we will first select the text. On selection, the text will have a purple border around it.

Now, we'll move the mouse to the right edge of the purple border as marked by the arrow (see the above screenshot) and click the left button of the mouse and drag it until the letters stack on top of each other (see the below screenshot).
In the above screenshot, you can see that all the letters of the text are aligned on top of each other but some of it has gone off our design space.
Now, we will select our text and drag it inside our design as shown in the below screenshot.
Now that our text is vertical, let's talk about enhancing it to make it even more appealing. Choosing the right font style and size is crucial to ensure readability.
Canva offers a wide range of fonts to choose from, so take your time to find the one that matches your design aesthetic.
As for font size, consider the size of your canvas and the amount of text you have. You don't want the text to be too small or too big, so find a balance that works for your design.
If you prefer, you can also make certain changes to your text like adding effects or changing its color, character spacing, spacing and more.
In the below screenshot, you can see that I have made the following changes to my text:
- Changed the font style to Chunk Five from Canva Sans
- Changed the font size to 34 from 30
That's it. You have successfully converted your horizontal text into a vertical text.
I hope now you know how to create vertical text in Canva by following some easy steps.
Tips: Colors, effects, and overlays can also play a significant role in making your vertical text pop. Experiment with different color combinations to find the one that creates the desired impact. You can also apply effects like gradients or shadows to add depth and dimension to your text. Don't be afraid to play around with overlays, such as lines or shapes, to further enhance your design.
