How to Create Pinterest Pins on Canva: 2026 Ultimate Beginner’s Guide

| | March 10, 2026

Pinterest is one of the most powerful platforms for driving traffic to blogs, websites, and digital products

Unlike many social media platforms, Pinterest works like a visual search engine where people search for ideas, tutorials, and inspiration. One well-designed Pin can bring traffic to your website for months or even years.

I personally use Pinterest to promote articles from my blog Technicalwall.com, and all the Pins are designed using Canva. The reason is simple: Canva makes it extremely easy to design professional-looking Pinterest graphics even if you are not a designer.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create Pinterest Pins on Canva step by step. By the end of this guide, you will be able to create Pins for your own blog, affiliate products, digital products, or even for clients.

How to Create Pinterest Pins on Canva

What is a Pinterest Pin?

A Pinterest Pin is a visual post that users upload on Pinterest to share ideas, articles, products, or inspiration. Each Pin usually contains an image, text overlay, and a link that leads users to a website.

When someone clicks on a Pin, they are redirected to the linked webpage. This is why Pinterest is a powerful traffic source for bloggers, affiliate marketers, and digital product creators.

Key Elements of a Pinterest Pin

Every Pin consists of following key components:

  • An image or graphic
  • A Title
  • A Description
  • A link to a website or blog
  • Keywords for search visibility

For example, when I publish a new tutorial on Technicalwall.com, I design a Pin on Canva with a title like “How to Create Infographics in Canva” and link it to my blog post.

Below is an example of the Pinterest Pin that I have created on Canva and published on my board in Pinterest.

As stated above, the above pin in Pinterest is linked with my blog article - How to create infographics in Canva. When users search for Canva tutorials on Pinterest, they may discover my Pin, click on it, and visit my website to read the article.

For bloggers, entrepreneurs, and businesses, Pins act like mini advertisements that keep working long after you post them.

Why Create Pinterest Pins?

Creating Pinterest Pins can be extremely beneficial for bloggers, creators, and online businesses. Here are some reasons why creating Pins is worth your time and why I focus so heavily on them for my blog Technicalwall.com:

  • Traffic generation: Pinterest is a search engine. A well-optimized Pin can bring consistent traffic to your blog or website.
  • Brand visibility: Pins help showcase your brand’s style, colors, and message.
  • Longevity: Unlike Instagram or Facebook posts, Pins have a long shelf life. A Pin can go viral months after being published.
  • Monetization: More traffic means more opportunities for ad revenue, affiliate sales, or product sales.

From my personal experience, some of my Pins created on Canva continue to drive traffic to my blog even after a year. That’s the magic of Pinterest.

Pinterest Traffic

In the above screenshot, you can see that ever since I started publishing on Pinterest consistently, I started getting meaningful traffic to my blog. The traffic is currently small but it is increasing steadily month by month.

Now, that you know one of the key benefits of publishing Pinterest Pins, let's explore how to make these pins on Canva.

How to Create Pinterest Pins on Canva?

Ready to make your first custom design? Follow this simple step-by-step tutorial.

Step 1: Set up Your Canva Account

If you don't have one, go to Canva.com and sign up. They have a completely free version that is incredibly powerful. Personally, I use Canva Pro because it gives me access to more premium images and features, but you absolutely do not need to pay to get started.

Step 2: Choose the Correct Pin Size

This is crucial. Pinterest prefers vertical images. If you post a square image, it won't get noticed.

  • On the Canva homepage, click on "Create" in the top left corner.
  • Type "Pinterest Pin" in the search bar.
  • Select "Pinterest Pin (1000 x 1500 px)". This is the standard 2:3 aspect ratio that Pinterest recommends.
Click Create on Canva Homepage

Click on the Create option as shown above. Next, type 'pinterest pin' in the search area as shown below and select the Pinterest Pin (2:3).

Step 3: Select a Template or Start Blank

Design Pinterest Pin in Canva Editor

You now have a blank white canvas. You have two options:

  • Option A (The Easy Route): Look at the left sidebar under the "Templates" tab. Canva has thousands of pre-made Pinterest Pin templates. Pick one you like and customize it.
  • Option B (The Creative Route): Keep it blank and build your own.

Personal Experience Tip: When I was a beginner, I always used templates. Now, to keep my brand consistent for technicalwall.com, I usually start from scratch but follow a specific layout I know works.

Select Pinterest Pin Template

When you select a Pinterest Pin template, it gets automatically applied to your pin design (see the above screenshot).

Now, you can customize each elements of your selected template such as background color, font style, text color, add or remove images, add icons or illustration from Canva Elements and more.

Step 4: Add Your Background and Images

Let’s build the pin.

  • Background: Go to the "Elements" tab on the left and search for photos, or simply select the white background and choose a solid color.
  • Uploads: If you have your own high-quality stock photos or product images, click "Uploads" and drag them into Canva.
  • Canva Photos: Search the "Elements" tab for photos that relate to your topic.

Drag your chosen image onto the canvas and resize it to fill the space.

For example, to change background color of your pin design, select the design, click on Background Color option and select a color from the right hand tab (see the screenshot below).

Step 5: Add a Headline and Text

This is the most important design element for getting clicks.

  1. Click the "Text" tab on the left.
  2. Click "Add a text box" or "Add a heading".
  3. Type your text or headline. It should be catchy and clearly state what the reader will get. (Example: "How to Start a Blog on a Budget").
  4. Change the font, size, and color using the top toolbar. Ensure it is very easy to read.
Adding Text in Pinterest Pin

In the above screenshot, you can see that I've made the following changes to my design:

  • Changed the background color
  • Added my website URL (www.technicalwall.com) at the bottom of the design

Please note that using the floating tool bar at the top, you can easily apply text formatting such as font style, font size, text color, text spacing, line spacing, apply alignment, and more

Step 6: Add Your Branding

At the very bottom of the Pin, add your logo or simply a smaller text box with your website URL (e.g., www.technicalwall.com). This builds brand awareness and makes it look professional.

Step 7: Download Your Pin

Once you are happy with the visual marketing graphic you've created:

  1. Click "Share" in the top right corner.
  2. Click "Download".
  3. Select PNG or JPG (PNG is usually higher quality, but JPG has a smaller file size).
  4. Click "Download".

Pro Tips for Creating High-Converting Pinterest Pins

Learning the tool is easy; learning the design strategy is the hard part. Here is my "secret sauce" for creating Pins that actually get clicks:

1. Readability is King (Fonts)

Do not use fancy, swirling script fonts for your main title. People browse Pinterest quickly on mobile devices. If they can't read your font in one second, they will scroll past.

  • Use Bold Fonts: Choose strong, easy-to-read Sans Serif or Serif fonts.
  • Highlight Keywords: Make specific words bigger or a different color to draw attention.

2. The Power of Contrast (Colors)

Don't blend in.

  • Background Color: If your text is light, use a dark background image/color block.
  • Text Color: If your background is busy or light, use dark, bold text.
  • My advice: Avoid too much of Pinterest’s own red/orange color palette; it tends to blend in too much with the platform's interface. Bright whites, yellows, teal, and navy usually stand out well.

3. Create a Call to Action (CTA)

Sometimes people need to be told what to do. Adding a small button or text that says "Click to read" or "Download the free guide" can significantly increase your click-through rate.

If you check my Pinterest page, you can see that I frequently add CTAs like "Read More", "Learn More", "Click to Learn More", "Click to Read the Full Post", and so on.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q2. What is the best Pinterest Pin size in 2024?

Answer. The recommended size is 1000 x 1500 pixels. This is a 2:3 aspect ratio.

Q3. Can I put my website URL on the Pin?

Answer. Yes, and you should! It establishes your brand. Make it small and place it at the top or bottom, but ensure it doesn't overlap the main headline.

Q4. Can Canva make video Pins?

Answer. Yes. You can use video clips in Canva, add animated text, and download it as an MP4 file to upload to Pinterest.
