How to Change Page Orientation in Canva [A 2026 Guide]

| | June 19, 2026

Canva has become one of the most popular design tools for creating social media graphics, presentations, flyers, posters, resumes, ebooks, and many other visual projects.

One of the most common issues users face while designing is realizing that they need to switch from a portrait layout to a landscape layout, or vice versa.

I have personally encountered this situation many times. While creating presentations and printable worksheets, I often started with a portrait design and later realized that a landscape layout would look much better.

The good news is that Canva provides ways to change page orientation, although the process differs for free and paid users.

In this guide, I will show you exactly how to change page orientation in Canva for both Canva Free and Canva Pro users, along with practical tips to avoid formatting issues after changing the layout.

How to Change Page Orientation in Canva

What Is Page Orientation in Canva?

Page orientation refers to the direction of your design canvas. There are two primary orientations:

Portrait Orientation

  • Taller than it is wide
  • Commonly used for flyers, resumes, ebooks, and posters

Landscape Orientation

  • Wider than it is tall
  • Commonly used for presentations, banners, and desktop wallpapers

Choosing the correct orientation helps improve readability and ensures your content fits naturally within the design.

When to Change Page Orientation in Canva

Many designers start working on a project before finalizing the dimensions. Some common situations include:

  • Converting a portrait presentation into landscape format
  • Changing a vertical flyer into a horizontal banner
  • Repurposing social media content
  • Creating print-ready documents
  • Adjusting designs according to client requirements
  • Optimizing layouts for different platforms

I remember creating a digital workbook for a client that was initially designed in portrait mode. After reviewing the content, the client felt that charts and tables would be easier to read in landscape format.

Instead of redesigning everything from scratch, changing the page orientation saved a significant amount of time.

How to Change Page Orientation in Canva

Canva Pro users have access to the Resize and Magic Resize feature, which makes orientation changes incredibly easy.

Step 1: Open Your Design

Log in to Canva and open the design you want to edit.

You can use this method for resumes, presentations, flyers, posters, infographics, social media graphics, documents, and more.

Open Existing Design in Canva

In the screenshot above, you can see that I've opened a square design that I've created on Canva to sell my Pinterest Pin templates. In this tutorial, I will show you how to change the orientation of this design. To do this, we'll move on to Step 2.

Step 2: Click the Resize Button

At the top-left corner of the Canva editor, locate the Resize button. Click it to open the resizing options. See the screenshot below.

Select Resize Canva Design

Please note that this feature is available only for Canva Pro, Canva Teams, and some premium plans.

Step 3: Select Custom Size

After clicking Resize, you'll see different dimension options.

Choose Custom Size. You will notice the current width and height of your design.

For example:

  • Portrait: 1080 × 1350
  • Landscape: 1350 × 1080

To switch orientation, simply swap the width and height values. Or, if the design is square in size such as 500 x 500, 1000 x 1000, and more.

Step 4: Change Width and Height

Change Design Size in Canva

In the screenshot above, you can see that the current size of my design is 500 x 500px. Now, if I want, I can easily convert this square design to a portrait or landscape.

Let us see an example. If your current design dimensions are:

1080 px × 1350 px

Change them to:

1350 px × 1080 px

This converts the design from portrait to landscape. Similarly, if you're changing landscape to portrait, reverse the values.

You can also search for a particular design like Pinterest, Instagram or Facebook. In the screenshot below, you can see that I've searched for Pinterest. Now, I can select one of the Pinterest designs as shown below.

Search Design in Canva

I have selected Pinterest Pin (2:3) where the size is 1000 x 1500 px. After selecting a design, you need to select Resize this design to replace the design or Copy & resize to create a new design without effecting the existing design.

Step 5: Click Resize or Copy & Resize

As mentioned in Step 4, Canva provides two options: 1. Resize this design - Changes the current design, and 2. Copy & Resize - Creates a duplicate with the new orientation while keeping the original design intact.

I usually prefer Copy & Resize because it allows me to compare both versions and avoid losing my original work.

Design changed to Pinterest Size

In the screenshot above, you can see that the design has changed to my selected size 1000 x 1500 px. Now, I only need to do some changes to the design elements - text, images, etc. to fit the new design layout.

So, the next important step in this tutorial, how to change page orientation in Canva, will be to adjust design elements.

Step 6: Adjust Design Elements

Although Canva automatically resizes the page, some elements may shift slightly.

Check text boxes, images, icons, shapes, charts, background elements and more. Drag and reposition them where necessary.

In most cases, only minor adjustments are needed.

In the screenshot below, you can see that I've made some changes according to the Pinterest Pin design size 1000 x 1500 px. Similarly, for a design created by you, by simply changing page orientation in Canva, you can create designs for multiple layouts.
