What is a Certificate and Why Should You Create One?
A certificate is an official document that recognizes achievement, participation, completion, or excellence in a particular activity, course, or event. It usually includes the recipient’s name, date, organization name, and signature.
Why Certificates Are Important
Certificates are not just decorative documents; they actually serve multiple purposes:
- They provide proof of achievement
- They increase trust and credibility
- They motivate participants or students
- They enhance brand value for your business
From my personal experience, when I started offering certificates with my digital products, I noticed that users felt more engaged and valued. It gave them a sense of accomplishment, which indirectly improved my product's reputation.
When Should You Use Certificates?
You can create certificates in many situations:
- Online course completion
- Workshop participation
- School or college achievements
- Employee recognition
- Event participation
- Internship completion
Types of Certificates You Can Create in Canva
- Certificate of Completion - Used for online courses, training programs, or workshops
- Achievement Certificate - Given to recognize outstanding performance or excellence
- Participation Certificate - Awarded to participants in events, competitions, or seminars
- Appreciation Certificate - Used to thank employees, volunteers, or contributors

How to Create Certificates in Canva?
Now let’s get into the most important part of this guide — how to make a certificate in Canva step by step.
Step 1: Open Canva and Search for Certificate Templates
Go to Canva and log in to your account. In the Home Page, select Templates and in the search bar, type “Certificate” and press Enter as shown in the screenshot below.
Now, you will see hundreds of ready-made templates related to different types of certificates - certificate of excellence, certificate of internship, employee of the year, certificate of completion, certificate of achievement, certificate of appreciation, and more. See the screenshot below.
👉 My Tip: When I started, I used templates instead of designing from scratch. It saved me hours and helped me understand design layouts better.
Step 2: Choose a Certificate Template
Browse through available templates and choose a design that fits your purpose. You need to select a template based on your purpose:
- For schools → simple & clean design
- For corporate → professional & minimal
- For events → creative & colorful
Before selecting a Canva certificate template, make sure that the text is readable, layout is balanced and colors match your brand.
Above screenshot is an example of certificate template that I have chosen for this tutorial. After selecting a template, a window as shown above will open. Now, you'll need to click on the 'Customize this template' button to open the template in the Canva Editor for further customization.
Step 3: Customize the Certificate Text
Customize the default text in the certificate template. This is where your certificate becomes unique. Edit the following:
- Title (e.g., Certificate of Completion)
- Recipient Name
- Description
- Date
- Signature
👉 Personal Tip: Always use larger font size for the recipient’s name to make it stand out. This small change makes your certificate look premium instantly.
To edit any text of a template, select the text and enter your text. To make any changes to text such as font style, font size, text color, and apply text formatting such as bold, italic, & underline, you can choose the required options from the floating tool bar as shown below.
For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that I have changed the font style of the selected text 'Marceline Anderson' from the floating tool bar.
Similarly, you can change any of the text present in the default certificate template.
Step 4: Add Elements (Icons, Borders, Seals)
After editing the text as mentioned in the last step, you can now enhance your certificate by adding logo, border, seals, and icons.
For example, you can go to the Elements tab and search for the terms “certificate border”, “badge”, and “seal”. These elements make your certificate look more official.
You can also upload your logo, and add a signature (PNG format) to make your certificate look more authentic and build trust.
In the screenshot above, you can see that I've searched for the term 'seal certificate' under the Elements tab. Next, you will need to click the seal that you want to add to your certificate replacing the existing the seal. This is completely optional. If you like the default seal, keep it.
Next, you can also replace the existing border and replace with a new one. In the screenshot below, you can see that I've searched "certificate border" in the Elements tab. Then, deleted the existing border and replaced with a new border.
After adding the seal, border, icon and making other changes, you need to check alignment of your elements in the certificate design before downloading it.
Step 5: Align and Review Your Design
Before downloading the certificate:
- Check alignment
- Ensure spacing is consistent
- Proofread text carefully
Use Canva’s alignment tools to keep everything neat. Also, proofread your text. Even a small spelling mistake can reduce the professionalism of your certificate.
Step 6: Download or Print Your Certificate
After finishing the certificate, you can download the certificate in your preferred format. Click on Share → Download.
Choose format:
- PDF Print (best for printing)
- PNG (for digital sharing)
👉 My Recommendation: Always use PDF Print for high-quality output.
How to Create Certificates from Scratch in Canva
If you don’t want to use templates:
- Click on “Custom Size”
- Set size (e.g., A4 or 11×8.5 inches for landscape certificate)
- Add text manually
- Insert shapes, icons, seal, and borders
- Design layout from scratch
👉 This method is useful when you want a unique design. Honestly, I prefer templates because they save time, but designing from scratch gives you full control.
How to Create Bulk Certificates in Canva?
While Canva is excellent for designing individual certificates, creating bulk certificates can be challenging. Canva doesn’t have a native bulk certificate feature. You’d need to manually duplicate and edit each certificate, which is time-consuming.
Workaround in Canva
- Create a master template.
- Duplicate the design for each recipient.
- Replace names and details manually.
This works for small batches but becomes impractical for hundreds of certificates.
