How to Create a Text Mask in Canva [A 2026 Tutorial]

Text masking is one of the most eye-catching and creative design techniques you can use in Canva. 

It involves placing an image or pattern inside the letters of a word or phrase, giving your design a visually rich and layered look. This method is incredibly popular in professional design tools like Photoshop, but the good news is—you can do it right inside Canva with a few simple tricks.

Creating a Text Mask in Canva Using Frames

This is my absolute favorite method and the one I use most often—especially when I want a bold, polished look with image-filled text. Canva’s letter frames make this process incredibly easy once you know where to find them.

Step 1: Open a New Design

Head over to Canva, log in, and create a new design (e.g., Instagram post, A4, Pinterest pin—anything works).

For this tutorial, I have chosen Instagram as my design.

Step 2: Search for Letter Frames

Go to the “Elements” tab on the left. In the search bar, type “letter frames” or simply type each letter followed by “frame” (e.g., A frame, B frame, C frame).

In the below screenshot, you can see that I have clicked on the Elements tab and searched for the term - letter frames, and press the Enter key.

As you press the Enter key, Canva display results like - Frames, Graphics, Photos, etc.

Now, click on See all under Frames.

Now, you'll see frames of different letters of English alphabet (see the below screenshot). Using these letters, we will try to create a text mask in Canva design.

Step 3: Arrange the Frames to Form a Word

 Add each letter individually and place them side by side to spell your desired word (e.g., LOVE, TRAVEL, SALE).

For this tutorial, I am going to insert the word - TRAVEL in my design and thereafter, I will add an image related to my chosen word, Travel to each frame letter one by one.

In the below screenshot, you can see that I have added the frame letters, TRAVEL, to my design.

In the next step, I will add an image to these frame letters.

Step 4: Upload or Choose Images

You can upload your own photos or use Canva’s library. I often use landscapes, textures, or products that match the theme. For example, when I created a promo image for a travel blog, I filled each letter of “WANDER” with a different scenic view.

For this tutorial, I will search for an image related to the word - Travel, in the Elements tab. I will again click on the Elements tab and enter search terms like Travel, Tourist Places, Famous Places, Switzerland, etc. and press the Enter key.

Now, click on See all option under Photos and scroll through these images until you find the one that you like to add as a text mask to your frame letters.

Once you find the image that you want to use to create text mask, just click on it and drag it on to the first frame letter

Step 5: Drag & Drop Images into Each Frame

In this step, you'll need to drag each image onto the frame letter—it will automatically clip into place. You can double-click each letter to adjust image placement inside the frame.

In this example (see the below screenshot), I have dragged the image to the first frame letter - T. And, I will repeat this process for each of the letters - R, A, V, E and L.

Below, you can see that I have dropped the images to each of the letter frames.

Next step in this tutorial is not mandatory but you can follow it to make your design more appealing and presentable to your audience.

Step 6: Align and Resize

Use the position tool to evenly space letters and align them properly. Resize the whole word if needed.

Next step is also completely optional - changing the background of your design. You can style the background as the way you want using the Elements tab.

Step 7: Style the Background

Add a complementary background—plain, gradient, or textured. This enhances contrast and makes your text mask stand out.

One of the most common questions I get—especially from new Canva users—is whether you need a Pro account to create text masks.

The good news? You don’t need Canva Pro to create basic text masking effects. But… having Pro does unlock some powerful extras that can elevate your design game.
