How to Make Flashcards on Canva

Step 1: Sign Up or Log In to Canva

To start, you need a Canva account. Canva is free to use, and you can sign up with your email, Google, or Facebook account. Once you log in, you’ll see a dashboard with many design options like posters, presentations, and social media posts.

But don’t worry—you don’t need to be a designer to use it. The Canva flashcard maker is very simple. Just type “flashcards” in the search bar, and Canva will show you ready-made templates.

These templates save time and give you a base to work with. If you prefer, you can also start with a blank design and build your flashcards from scratch.

Step 2: Choose a Flashcard Template

Canva offers hundreds of templates for different purposes. Some are colorful for kids, while others are clean and professional for adults.

When you search “flashcards” in Canva, you’ll see options like math flashcards, language flashcards, or general study flashcards. Pick one that matches your purpose.

For example, if you are making flashcards for studying biology, choose a simple design with space for text and images.

In the screenshot below, you can see that I have searched for the term 'flashcard'. After entering the search term, Canva will offer lots of templates related to your search term.

Templates are flexible—you can change colors, fonts, and layouts later. The best part is that Canva’s flashcard maker allows you to customize everything, so your flashcards will look unique and personal.

Next, you'll need to select a flashcard template that you like and customize it in Canva Editor to fit your requirement.

Step 3: Customize the Design

Once you select a template, it’s time to make it yours. Canva lets you change background colors, add shapes, and adjust text.

For example, if you want bright flashcards for kids, you can use bold colors like yellow or red. If you want professional flashcards for college, you can use soft tones like blue or gray.

You can also upload your own images or use Canva’s free library of icons and photos. Remember, the goal is to make flashcards that are easy to read and visually appealing. Don’t overcrowd them with too much text or decoration. Keep them simple and clear.

Selected Flashcard Template in Canva

In the screenshot above, you can see that I have selected a cloud face emotion flashcard template. After selecting a template, click on the 'customize the template' button. See the screenshot below.

Customize Flashcard Template in Canva

Your selected flashcard template will now open in the Canva Editor. Here, you can customize each elements (text, image, icons, background) of the template to make it your own.

For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that I've selected a text, now we can enter a new text or apply font style, color or make it bold, italic from the floating tool as shown below.

Change text, image and background

Similarly, to change the image, you can select the image and delete it. Next, click on the Elements tab and enter your search term and press Enter. Now, you'll get lots of images related to your search term. Click on the image that you like and it will added to your design.

Step 4: Add Your Content

This is the most important step. Flashcards are all about content. On one side of the card, write the question or term. On the other side, write the answer or explanation.

For example, if you are learning Spanish, one side could say “Hola” and the other side “Hello.”

Canva makes it easy to add text boxes and adjust font size. Use large fonts for clarity. You can also add images to make learning more visual.

Studies show that people remember 65% more information when text is paired with images. So, if you are studying animals, add a picture of a lion along with the word “Lion.”

In Step 3, you saw that I selected Canva flashcard template related to cloud face emotions. Let's convert it into a question answer form. To do that, first we will duplicate our page. Click on the duplicate icon (see the screenshot below) to duplicate the page.

Duplicate the Flashcard page

In the screenshot below, you can see that I have duplicated the page.

Now, we will convert it into a question answer form. To do that, we will replace the emotion words in the first design with dotted lines.

From the first page, I have deleted the emotion words. Next, we will click the Elements tab and search 'dotted line' and again click the dotted line as shown below to add it to our first page.

Add Dotted Line

Below, you can see that our first page or design is the question type flashcard and the second flashcard is the answer to the first. Similarly, you can create different type of question answer form of flashcards in Canva.

Step 5: Organize Your Flashcards

When you create multiple flashcards, it’s important to keep them organized. Canva allows you to duplicate pages, so you can make a set of flashcards quickly.

For example, if you are making 20 vocabulary flashcards, just duplicate the template and change the text for each card. You can also group flashcards by subject. For example:

  • Math formulas
  • Vocabulary words
  • History dates

This way, you can study one topic at a time. Canva’s flashcard maker makes organization simple, and you can even name your project so you don’t lose track.

Step 6: Download or Print Your Flashcards

After you finish designing, you can download your flashcards in different formats like PDF, PNG, or JPG. If you want to study offline, print them out and cut them into cards. If you prefer digital learning, keep them on your phone or tablet.

To download the flashcard, go the Share button on the top-right and then click the Download option. Next choose your preferred format - PDF, PNG, or JPG.

Canva allows you to share your flashcards with friends or classmates too. This is great for group study sessions.

The option to make flashcards online free and then print them gives you flexibility. You can carry them anywhere or study directly from your device.

Step 7: Use Your Flashcards for Studying

Now comes the fun part—using your flashcards. Flashcards are most effective when used regularly.

Try the “active recall” method: look at the question side and try to answer before flipping to the answer side. This strengthens memory.

You can also shuffle your flashcards to avoid memorizing in order. If you are studying with friends, quiz each other using your flashcards.

Research shows that students who use flashcards score 30–40% higher in exams compared to those who only read notes. So, make flashcards a habit in your study routine.

Who Should Create Flashcards and Why

Flashcards are not just for school students. They are useful for many people:

  • Students: To memorize formulas, vocabulary, or key concepts.
  • Teachers: To make learning interactive and fun for their students.
  • Parents: To help kids learn alphabets, numbers, or simple words.
  • Professionals: To prepare for certifications, interviews, or presentations.

The reason flashcards are so effective is because they use repetition and active recall. Instead of passively reading, you actively test yourself. This makes learning faster and more permanent.
